Short Thought: Games that Nintendo Should Make for the Switch 2 Mouse

Short Thought: Games that Nintendo Should Make for the Switch 2 Mouse

I am a huge fan of videogames (if you haven’t noticed), and I have a large collection of consoles. Throughout my life, my family always had Nintendo consoles, so when the Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders became available, I made sure to secure mine. Nintendo has always been a fan of having unique controls, like the Wiimotes, R.O.B. the robot (which didn’t work amazingly well, but was unique), or the Joy-Cons. So I wasn’t surprised to see that the new magnetic controllers on the Switch 2 could be used like a mouse. I started thinking about what games would work great with this peripheral. Here are the first couple of things that came to mind. There are a lot more, but I’ll touch on those later.

This isn’t the first time in Nintendo’s history that they’ve used a controller like this. Back on the Super Nintendo, you could buy a bundle with the Super NES Mouse, Mario Paint, and a plastic mouse pad. This corded mouse connected through the first-player controller port. This game lets you paint pictures, create your own artwork and animations, and even compose music with a huge variety of instruments and silly sound effects — like cats meowing and dogs barking — to create your own masterpiece. If you look on YouTube, you can find some amazing pieces of music that people have made with this game. It’s so impressive to see the songs created with the music maker in this game.

I think with the Switch 2, Nintendo should release a new version of this title — or at least a remaster of this creative game. It would be silly not to take advantage of these new mouse capabilities. The music would sound better, and now it would be easier to share your creations with other people. Maybe you could create a song online with people you know, but make it so that you keep the original and just send a copy, just in case someone decides to be evil and mess with your work.

Speaking of being creative, another title that would work great with a mouse would be a new Mario Maker title. This is kind of a no-brainer, but being able to click and place pieces would be a lot faster. Plus, with the thumbstick on the side, you could use it to scroll through different options easily. Once your level is created, turn the controller to test it out for yourself. Like previous versions of the game, being able to post it online for other people to try or trying out other players’ creations adds tonnes of replayability to the title. Plus, it will look great with the 4K visuals when the console is docked to the TV.

These are just a couple of the games that first came to mind when I saw that the Switch 2 controller could be used as a mouse. I’m excited to see how the games already announced for release will work with this peripheral, like the updated Mario Party Jamboree. Guaranteed it will have some super fun mini-games that will use it!

These aren’t the only games that I feel would be a good fit, keep an eye out for my follow-up article for more ideas!
