So I Tried… Youropa

Each edition of So I Tried… I will try a game that I have never played before. Will I find something new to love? Will I find something new to despise? I'll take a full half hour, no matter how bad it gets or how badly I do, to see if this is the game for me. This time I went for the PC version of Youropa.

What I thought it was

A physics-based third-person platformer where colour has been stolen from the world and you need to retrieve it without losing your own colour in the process. I watched part of the trailer without sound a week ago, so some of the finer details have been lost to my poor memory, but I think you can walk on walls? It looked interesting enough at first glance, and I already owned it (thanks, long-forgotten bundles!), so start the timer!

What it actually is

A puzzle platformer which sees Paris destroyed by a gravity phenomenon, and you are the only non-monster survivor thanks to a falling paint can. You’re able to walk on any surface, so long as you get there via a slope of some kind. If you try to go over a vertical drop, you’ll just fall to your doom and lose some paint. Once your paint is all gone, it’s game over! Thankfully, it's not actually that big of a deal, as you just start from one of the very numerous checkpoints. You can zoom the camera out to look for secrets or puzzle hints, since every area is its own “level” with a few collectables to nab.

Will I keep playing

While I do enjoy puzzle games, I’m absolutely awful at them. In 30 minutes, I had literally just unlocked the ability to grab things, and I’m pretty sure most people would have unlocked that much earlier. I’d like to keep playing, though I worry I’ll wind up getting frustrated as the puzzles get more difficult, causing me to abandon the game. But from what I played, I did enjoy it, and I was even able to work everything out without looking up solutions online. So yes, (for now) this is something I’ll come back to.
