Everything You Need to Know About The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered

Bethesda recently caught everyone by surprise with the sudden release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. The excitement in the community is palpable, as it seems like the only thing you hear about in Discord at the moment. So, if you don't know what's new, let me break it down for you!

What's new in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered?

With the help of Unreal Engine 5, Bethesda enhanced the visuals quite dramatically by recreating Oblivion's world from scratch; as the Steam post says, "If you can see it, it's been remade". They added more detailed character models, improved the NPC lip-syncing, and added more effects around Cyrodiil to breathe life into it.

One of the tools used to enhance details is the real-time lighting system, which more accurately simulates how light interacts with its environment, making shadows feel more realistic.

It's not just the graphics that got modernised: although the game (and its narrative) remain unchanged, the team added some quality-of-life improvements to make it even better. Character locomotion and models have also been built from the ground up, including added visual & sound effects and hit interactions to make it more engaging.

Bethesda acknowledges seeing their community's characters throughout videos (and possibly screenshots), dropping a comedic mention to the "horrifying monsters" that players have made in the character creator. This humorous comment gave leeway to the improved third-person perspective, which includes a crosshair so that players can see their characters.

Other quality-of-life improvements added to make the game match today's standards are:

  • A redesigned levelling system that mashes Oblivion's with Skyrim's.
  • UI and UX improvements.
  • New dialogue was recorded to fix issues, such as some races sharing the same voice.
  • The ability to sprint.
  • And more.

The post doesn't go more in-depth, but that just seems to be the biggest changes made. In the end, the team had the following to say:

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is a love letter to fans of the original game, bringing modernised graphics, refined gameplay, and numerous quality-of-life improvements.

Oblivion is considered a classic for a reason. So many people have fond memories of playing the original decades ago. Now, those same players can return to Cyrodiil and experience the magic all over again alongside a new generation of Elder Scrolls fans. So, gear up, close shut the jaws of Oblivion, and bring Tamriel back from the brink of destruction.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is available now Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Steam for £49.99!
