Jo-Mei and EA's Captivating Sea of Solitude Revealed at E3
As part of their E3 Conference, EA delved into their EA Originals Program, and one of the standout reveals on that front was a positively enthralling new experience, Sea of Solitude, developed by German indie developers Jo-Mei Games and unleashed upon the world by EA.
A very nervous and endearing Cornelia Geppert took the stage to talk about her vision, which is all about a very human experience: loneliness.
"When humans get too lonely, they turn into monsters," Geppert said. "This is at the core of everything."
Geppert said that she penned the game when she was experiencing these feelings firsthand, and as a result, "the concept just seems to flow out of me right out of my hand and onto the paper."
"It's not a made-up story even though it takes place in a fantastical setting."
Not much was specifically revealed about the gameplay, but the crowd was treated to an absolutely entrancing trailer that showed off the colorful and captivating graphics in a world that was somehow bright and ominous and foreboding all at once. The gameplay features the main character, Kay, who has been transformed into a monster by her loneliness, and must find out why this has happened to her and, hopefully, how to transform back.
Sea of Solitude seems to be all about exploration as Kay navigates the vibrant and surreal landscape around her seeking answers. As the game's title suggests, water seems to play a significant role in gameplay, both symbolically and as an actual physical obstacle.
"The story of Sea of Solitude is unique and important. It is both beautiful and terrifying at the same time. The game is a great demonstration of the experiences that we want to help players discover through EA Originals," says Patrick Söderlund, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Studios at EA. "I cannot wait to share more about Sea of Solitude with our partners at Jo-Mei in the months ahead."
Sea of Solitude is expected to drop on PC, PlayStation 4, and XBox One early 2019.
