Mortal Kombat 1 Receives New Purchasing Edition, Confirming End of Content Cycle
It's undeniable to say that publisher Warner Bros. Games has had a bit of a turbulent few years. While some of their releases have been hit with acclaim, it has been controversy after controversy regarding their stance in the videogame industry, and it has led to reported gaming revenue loss for the company that has seen it change plans drastically.
Its numerous controversies aside regarding franchises, launches, or live-service models, it's undeniable that Mortal Kombat 1 was a bright look and future for the franchise, offering a bit of a reboot and a new future for NetherRealm Studios, performing critically well but missing its mark with the audiences. Still, there have been plenty of die-hard fans, as the game still sees 24-hour peaks of nearly 3,000 players on any given day, and it's a long-standing franchise in the industry that has become synonymous with the 2D fighting genre.
Despite the enthusiasm by fans, and the seemingly bright future ahead in terms of content, it seems like it's time to bid farewell to Mortal Kombat 1, as the official "Definitive Edition" launches in a near-shadows drop style, all but confirming the end of its content cycle. Having launched back on the 19th of September 2023, it's been nearly two years since Mortal Kombat 1, with over 30 DLC released for the franchise, but there was more that fans were hoping to be able to see before the end of its lifespan.
The Mortal Kombat 1 Definitive Edition gives players the opportunity to pick up the game with 21 DLC included, or a Definitive Edition upgrade lets those who already own the base game get a slew of them at quite a hefty discount. The Definitive Edition includes 20 DLC priced at a total individual package worth £187.00 for just £54.99, giving you £132.01 in savings, or about a 70.5% discount on all of the content you'll be picking up.
Of course, if you already bought Mortal Kombat 1 and are looking to start your journey with the DLC characters, then you can also pick up the Definitive Edition Upgrade for £49.99. It might not be as good of a deal as buying the Definitive Edition straight up, but it still gives a hefty discount on all of the items available.
The reception for the announcement of the Complete Edition has been negative from the enthusiastic fans of the franchise, as many were hoping for a far longer support cycle for this run of Mortal Kombat. Many are showing frustration of having supported the game on launch, paying more for the numerous editions, premium currencies, and DLC, expecting more content to be coming, whereas the hefty discounts show nothing for long-time supporters of the title.
You can pick this up on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, the Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
