Rebellion Basks in New Biggest Release with Atomfall's Player Milestone

Rebellion has been around for 32 years, as their Sniper Elite franchise swiftly became the epitome of long-distance murders and x-ray brutality. Having seen now so many entries into their long-standing franchise, the company decided to veer off into something a bit different, deviating from their 1940s-set series into new horizons.

Atomfall has players exploring a British tattered by a nuclear apocalypse (albeit a far different sight from the usual Fallout views we're accustomed to). Set five years after the Windscale nuclear disaster in Northern England, players will explore a fictional quarantine zone, engaging with scavenging, crafting, bartering, fighting, or talking your way through the world.

Released on the 27th of March (or the 25th for Deluxe Edition owners), the first weekend of Atomfall was the real trial stage to see the numbers that the title would reach, though Rebellion seemed quite astonished by the reality come Monday. Seeing a total of 1.5 million players scattered across all of its consoles, the one-week-old Atomfall has become Rebellion's most successful launch yet, which is a grand statement for the team behind the beloved Sniper Elite franchise.

We are delighted that so many players are enjoying Atomfall. To have surpassed the one million players in such a short space of time speaks volumes for the creativity and dedication of the entire team here at Rebellion. Our size and stability mean that we can take risks to create something as different as Atomfall. Happily, that risk is paying off.

We are a British company, and the game is a true reflection of that. Not only is it set in the lush, beautiful countryside but Atomfall also draws inspiration from so many classic British books, films and TV series.

We hope that players continue to enjoy exploring the world of Atomfall and are looking forward to future content for the game.

— Jason Kingsley, CBE, CEO, and co-founder of Rebellion

So, how grand was this release exactly? The most recent Sniper Elite title may not be the best example of Rebellion's capability, having released to mixed reception among Steam users and not a substantial amount of all-time peak players (a little over 7,500). But yet, the 2022 Sniper Elite 5 saw good positive reception, with 14,870 total players at its all-time peak set on the day of its release.

Compared to both, Atomfall seems to land short, with just a little over 6,000 all-time peak. Still, there are two things to note about these statistics: the post-apocalyptic British adventure was a risk for Rebellion, as it wasn't a Sniper Elite entry that many players have come to know and love, but this is also only looking at the Steam numbers.

The 1.5 million number comes from a mixture of its platform releases. It's available on the Xbox family with Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, also on Sony's PlayStation with PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and even PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. The exact distribution of its player count will never really be revealed, but knowing the Steam concurrent amount gives us a hint at how it's performed on other consoles, and perhaps Atomfall's greatest boon was the day-one release on Xbox Game Pass.

If you'd like to join in on the fun, you can start your journey either via the Xbox Game Pass or for £44.99 on consoles and PC.
