This Is Your Last Chance to Get the Flayed Man for Free; Learn Everything You Need to Know About It Here!
Developed and published by Snoring Dog Games, The Flayed Man is a short point-and-click narrative-focused adventure where players embody a character without memory or skin. It features multiple endings, a pixel-art style, and mature themes.
Recently, the developer made a post on Steam where they talked about the game's pricing changes and the reasons behind it, stating that it will be very affordable and they will take steps to ensure fairness through regional pricing (which I appreciate, as someone from Colombia).
Since the game was originally free-to-play, it had a supporter pack DLC; it currently costs £4.99. Aside from dropping its price (the amount hasn't been disclosed), there will be more items added to it as well as a CC BY-NC 4.0 license: in other words, players will be able to tweak and change the game non-commercially.
The decision was made because, despite the positive reviews, the team isn't receiving a lot of monetary support. The developer mentioned that they'll not be receiving even a penny, as it will all go to paying off the artists at Snoring Dog Games.
Here's a short version of the FAQ:
What's the rush?
All the costs from the game and the studio have come directly from the developer's own pocket, including a fair amount of money to the artists. They mention it won't be a sustainable road, especially because in order for the game to remain on Steam for another year, they'll need to pay £1,000, and since they're not receiving much support. This is particularly true since it seems Snoring Dog Games is at the brink of needing to close; according to the developer, since they're based in the UK, this would mean they'd have to delist.
While the original idea was to do so in June, the team has decided to try out a paid model in hopes of keeping the game afloat. Whilst the game has had over 4,500 players and is claimed by around 36,000 libraries on Steam, they haven't received enough support to either make a new game (which seems to be asked for a lot) or sustain The Flayed Man.
I've already bought the supporter pack; now what?
Even if players haven't downloaded their Supporter Pack DLC, they'll always have access to it as well as the upcoming additions without having to pay anything else.
The Flayed Man will remain free-to-play until the 17th of May; if you pick it up before then, consider buying the supporter pack DLC.
