Twilight Wars Preview

I decided to check out Twilight Wars, a cyberpunk turn-based dungeon crawler developed and published by Comrade Bear Games. The first game to ever come from this studio, it drew me in with its premise and gameplay trailer, so I wanted to see what’s in store.

The game began with an introductory mission for both me and the in-game agents. In this world, corporations have succeeded the government and have taken over as its leaders. To keep them in check, the Anonymous Arbitration Agency (or Triple-A) was created to put a stop to anything that may disrupt the peace, however fragile it may be.

The team sent on this mission consisted of a standard soldier, a Kingsman-like with a pug, a nearly naked woman with a katana, and a medic in a catsuit. The soldier — codenamed Mentor — was the only veteran while all the others were rookies, so it was best to ease into the swing of things, despite how important the mission may be, only dealing with giant mutated rats and the occasional marauder.

Fights play out in a turn-based system, where the position of your team members matters. Each character has a unique set of skills to attack enemies and support allies, with some requiring the use of a shared Energy resource to execute. You also have access to an inventory of items, which you can buy before every mission, or you can choose to swap positions or skip your turn. Between fights, you’ll encounter opportunities to gather resources or run into events, which will require specific skills to obtain or to resolve peacefully. It’s all pretty standard stuff.

Then, all of a sudden, things start going wrong. Mentor loses connection to home base, the team is ambushed, and all the soldier can do is sacrifice himself to allow the rookies to escape. The Triple-A has been compromised and the Blank Slate protocol is initiated. Only Shi, the Agency’s benevolent AI, and the director (you) are left to build it back up again.

From there, you’ll be managing and upgrading a secret underground base and launching missions to slowly but surely get to the bottom of this before total corporate-sponsored anarchy reigns supreme. Between missions, you can manage your team, add and upgrade rooms (such as an Infirmary, Gym, or Therapy Office) or talk to Shi and your Agents to get more of their backstory and boost their morale. It might seem pointless to press Like on their comments, but the more Loyal they are, the less likely they’ll drag down the team or leave the Triple-A altogether. It’s important to be approachable, but remember that your group of misfits is all that stands between balance and absolute destruction, and a happy ending isn’t guaranteed.

Twilight Wars is essentially Darkest Dungeon meets XCOM: Enemy Unknown, from sending out people to their potential deaths and the survivors coming back either mightier or worse than ever, to building an underground base that will provide anything and everything needed to ensure future missions go smoothly or at least have less bodies to deal with. Don’t worry, you can revive them… at the slight cost of their humanity. It is cyberpunk after all.

After getting through the first chapter, it’s safe to say that I’m looking forward to the rest of my playthrough of Twilight Wars. I find the combat interesting (and pretty tough, even on Normal difficulty) and all the management needed to keep things from falling apart is intriguing. How you balance the books is just as important as how you balance relationships.

Twilight Wars will release on Steam on the 23rd of May.
