Spiritfall Review

Spiritfall Review

Spiritfall is a roguelite platform fighter developed by Gentle Giant that was released on the PC on 28th of February 2024. My fellow writer for GameGrin, UknownHero, got a chance to review the game and loved it. Spiritfall is now coming to console, and I couldn’t resist trying it out for myself on my Xbox Series S. Was anything changed in the move from PC to console, or is it still a fantastic roguelite title?

The world of Spiritfall is being overtaken by a blight that causes monsters to invade and corrupt some of the inhabitants, turning them into super-powerful foes. A group of spirits, tasked with watching over the land, has lost their power due to the closing of the Great Gate. Unable to fight the threat directly, they use the Perennial Fire to select a vessel — that’s you — to battle on their behalf. They have given your fighter a mask bestowing the power of the Omenforged to help restore balance to this world, sending you to the Brink to unseal the Great Gate.

One of the first things you’ll notice is the game's excellent animation and art style. The Omenforged’s “head flame” behind the mask is constantly moving, giving it a sense of life. Each location features a unique variety of nature-themed enemies, like wasps, scorpions, and armadillos, which keeps combat visually engaging. Special attacks look great, and pulling off combos is effortless thanks to the intuitive control scheme. The music is catchy and changes based on your location. It never feels repetitive or irritating.

The controls in Spiritfall are easy to learn and responsive. The bottom face button is used to jump, the left for swinging your weapon, the right for firing a bolt (which has a cooldown), and the top for a charged attack — perfect for launching enemies into the air. When combined with directional inputs, these moves flow smoothly, letting you pull off impressive combos. However, these basic attacks alone won’t be enough to cleanse the land of the blight.

Thankfully, enemies are highly readable, with clear animations when they’re preparing to strike. Every time I took damage, it was because I rushed instead of timing my attacks properly. Again, combos are easy to pull off due to the smart control layout. The music, once more, deserves praise for being location-based and never grating.

As an Omenforged, you’ll receive support from seven spirits who grant new abilities and enhancements. There are over 150 blessings to discover, and so far, I haven't encountered any that felt useless. They all made me feel more powerful. I loved experimenting with different combinations to see which were most effective in battle. While this is a roguelite, dying in battle sends you back to the Sanctum — and any blessings you gained on your run are lost.

At the Sanctum, spirits you encountered on your run glow with coloured lights. If you visit the Perennial Flame located in front of the guardians, you'll find that each spirit you received blessings from has a skill tree. You can spend Dormant Embers here to unlock permanent upgrades. These abilities mean you grow stronger with every attempt, even in failure. The Runesmith allows you to buy new weapons — like gauntlets, bows, link blades, or the staff, The Equinox — or upgrade your current ones to make them stronger.

I really liked the art style and animation. Each area offers its own enemy types, and as mentioned, they’re well-animated and easy to read in battle. Before each run, you see a route map showing different paths that lead to the area’s final boss. Along the way, you’ll battle enemies, earn blessings, and occasionally find hidden Rifts — unique encounters at crossroads between two rewards. In these, you fight a single enemy and must knock them off the stage three times before the clock runs out. If you succeed, you get both rewards, but these fights can be risky and cost significant health.

There are a huge variety of portals to visit, like the Celestial Exchange, which lets you purchase items with your gold dust; a Tribute Room, which has two different spirits where you can sacrifice 20 health to them and be rewarded, or you can walk away; and Vitality Crest locations, which increase your max amount of health. If you plan it out right, you can visit a spot to replenish your HP before you jump into battle with the area's boss.
Spiritfall is a fun, fast-paced, and action-packed game. With so many blessings, skills to unlock, and weapons to upgrade, there's always something new to explore. I appreciated that every defeat led to progress — making me stronger for the next run. This is a must-play roguelite that I recommend to everyone to try out.
